February News 2009
School Newsletter
From the Desk of Tricia
The month of February brings several new families to The Learning Center, and we would like to extend a warm welcome to all of you.
We have been busy preparing for an exciting month revolving around dental health, healthy habits and Valentine's Day. We are planning a visit from our local pediatric dentist, towards the end of the month. On the subject of dental hygiene TLC will starting our own brush your teeth program. Each family is requested to bring in a toothbrush for their child to brush their teeth after lunch time. This is also a new regulation being implemented by The Department of Early Education and Care. Please make sure to send in a toothbrush for your child by February 19th. Thank you for your assistance in getting this plan started. Permission slips will follow soon.
On February 12 our classes will be celebrating Valentine's Day. Each classroom will participate by exchanging Valentine cards, playing games and enjoying special snacks. To make the card exchange as effortless as possible we suggest you address the cards "to my: friend, classmate, pal etc." and have them sign their name. We are hoping this creates a stress free way to fill out your valentines. Sign up sheets for party goodies will be located on our sign up sheets. Thank you all for participating. The children truly enjoy these festivities.
TLC will be closed Monday, February 15th in observance of President's Day. This begins our February School Vacation week. There will be a sign up sheet on our Parent Boards for parents to sign if your family is planning time off during this week. This helps us plan our schedule for that week. Just a reminder Half Pint classes will not take place this week. Thank you in advance for your help.
There have been some slight changes to our classroom teachers; Marie has been re-located to The Clubhouse classroom. Marie is a great energy in that classroom. She is also filling in our other classrooms as necessary. Melissa LaPointe is co-teaching with Kerri in the Little Rascals since her return from maternity leave. We have made these changes to help recover from the down turn of the economy. We are now looking at some positive changes and looking forward to a triumphant school year.
Re-Registration
Fall registration is coming up. We have been receiving calls for availability in our 2010-2011 school year. There have also been some changes made in the Public School Kindergarten classes. TLC is looking into ways to adapt our program to better serve the families in our community that are in need of child care. Before we enroll new families, we need to know how many of you plan on continuing in the fall.
All children planning to re-enroll for September must be re-registered by March 5th. As stated in our family handbook, an annual re-registration fee of $50.00 per child must be paid when you register for the upcoming September. Forms will be sent out presently.
If you wish to change your child's schedule, please provide us with a written request. The Learning Center of Hopkinton will try to accommodate these requests, but we cannot guarantee that different hours can be substituted for those previously scheduled.
If you have any questions or concerns please fell free to speak with Trish, Jen, or Melissa. We look forward to another successful year with The Learning Center of Hopkinton.

We wrapped January up by learning about different disabilities some people are faced with.
The Little Tykes will begin February with Punxsutawney Phil, the famous groundhog waking up from his hibernation to see if he can see his shadow. We will also welcome in The Year of the Tiger by making paper lanterns and Chinese Dragons.
Love will be in the air as we create many Valentine projects including a something special for Mom & Dad. We will be having a party on February 12th, please look for the donation sign up in the lobby. President's day will be the next stop on our learning adventure. The month full of love has arrived! The Little Rascals have had a great stuff in January and can't wait to find out what's to come in February. We are so happy to have Melissa as a part of our classroom. Marie still comes to visit and it seems the children are adjusting well and really enjoy having her back.
We can't wait to see if the Groundhog sees his shadow the beginning of this month. It sure would be nice to see spring come early this year! Our class will celebrate Groundhog Day with puppets and shadow matching. Dental health will also be an important topic this month. We'll talk about the importance of brushing and flossing and we look forward to a visit from our local Pediatric Dentist.
Cupid will fly through our room this month. If everyone could please bring in an empty cereal box by February 8th, we would really appreciate it. The Little Rascals will be using them to make our "purr-fect" valentine box.
We will finish off the month discussing forms of communication, President's Day, and the Chinese New Year.
As always, any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to speak with us. Thanks for your continued cooperation in making sure your child has all their snow gear.
Happy Valentine's Day!

The month of January was enjoyed to the fullest. The children learned about different climates around the world and how polar bears and penguins live in the cold arctic.
During our unit on Handicap awareness the children were able to experience first hand what it was like to be blind as we painted while blindfolded. We discussed the many challenges handicap people face while living their everyday lives.
Finally, our hibernation unit was most intriguing, how animals who hibernate survive through the fall and cold weather months by filling their bellies and making dens for their long winters nap.
Our class picture will take place Tuesday, February 2nd at 9:30 am. Individual pictures will take place 15 minutes before the group picture. Please make plans to arrive by 9:00 am that day.
February is going to be a sweet month for the Small Fries. We will discuss the importance of dental health. On February 12th we will be holding our Valentines Day party. Please make sure to have your child bring in their valentines to hand out to their classmates. There will also be a sign up sheet to help out with the goodies for our party.

January was a successful month in K2, as was the Kindergarten switchover. Everyone has been adjusting well to their new schedules and routines. Our thematic units for February will focus on the three holidays this month, Groundhog Day, Valentines Day, and President's Day. We will also brush up on our Dental Health knowledge, learn about all different forms of communication, and have some fun talking about the Chinese New Year.
We will be having our annual Valentine's Day party on Friday, February 12th. The children will be making their own mailboxes to receive their Valentines. Please have your child bring in an empty shoebox or tissue box by Monday Feb. 8th for your child to decorate in class. There will be a sign up sheet for donations to our party.
A reminder our class picture will take place Feb. 3, 2010 at 10:00 am. Please arrive early. I hope you all have a fabulous February and keep thinking spring!

The Clubhouse
This January proved to be a fun and exciting month. We've learned about different kinds of disabilities and performed an activity where the kids were blindfolded and led each other through an obstacle course. We also had a guest speaker, Alex Danahy, come in and talk to the kids about what it is like to be in a wheelchair. We have spent many afternoons out sledding on our hill in the front yard, we built snowmen and snow forts.
On Mondays we have started "Activities with Dan". Making paper airplanes was a huge hit with the kids. They made a gigantic airplane that everyone signed, that will be hung for everyone to view. Another weekly activity is "Music time with Craig" held on Wednesday. The children choose a song and Craig plays it on his guitar as they all sing along. We will be making our own instruments to play along, if you have an instrument of your own to share please feel free to bring it in on Wednesdays.
We spent the last week of January learning about Greek Mythology. Grayson and Kyle did quite a bit of research and shared the information with the class. Other regular activities taking place are karaoke on Friday, setting up a talent show and working on finishing a puzzle we can glue and hang on the wall.
Next month, we will be discussing dental health and the best way to keep your teeth healthy. We are all looking forward to ground hog day and hoping we are looking towards an early Spring. We will also learn about our famous President and discover some interesting facts.
February vacation is coming up the 15-19 of Feb. please let us know your vacation plans for that week on our sign up sheet located in the lobby. This helps us staff appropriately. We will be closed Mon. Feb. 15 for President's day.
On Friday, February 12th The Clubhouse will celebrate Valentine's Day. There will be a sign up sheet for goodies on our sign in sheet. We will be having a group chat to discuss how we plan on exchanging Valentines.
Happy Valentine's Day - Kelley, Marie, and the Crew
